IKEA JÄRVFJÄLLET Review (A Chiropractor’s Verdict)
What it gets right, where it falls short, and who this chair could suit
If you’re looking for an affordable ergonomic chair, the IKEA JÄRVFJÄLLET has probably already come up in your search.
It’s one of IKEA’s most adjustable chairs, and that is a big part of its appeal. It looks modern, offers several useful features, and comes in at a price point that feels more accessible than many premium ergonomic chairs.
But does it actually support you well enough for real working life?
As a chiropractor, I see a lot of people who have bought chairs like this hoping they will solve their back pain. Sometimes they help. Sometimes they fall short in the places that matter most.
In this review, I’ll break down what the JÄRVFJÄLLET does well, where it falls short, and who I think it may suit best.

First Impressions and Features
The JÄRVFJÄLLET is one of IKEA’s more feature-rich office chairs, and that becomes obvious fairly quickly when you sit in it.
Key features include:
- Height-adjustable headrest
- Adjustable lumbar support that moves up and down
- Seat depth adjustment (seat slide)
- Synchronous tilt mechanism
- Recline lock positions
- Optional 2D armrests on newer models
From a features point of view, it offers more than many budget chairs, especially when compared with the many unknown options people buy online based on pictures alone.
What the JÄRVFJÄLLET Gets Right
Strong adjustability for the price
This is where the chair stands out most.
The seat slide is particularly useful. If you have longer legs, it allows more support under the thighs without leaving too much of a gap behind the knees. If you’re shorter, you can bring it back in and create a better fit.
The adjustable lumbar support and recline function also give it more versatility than a standard office chair in this price bracket.
For a chair at around this sort of price point, that is a genuine strength.
Solid build quality and IKEA reliability
Like a lot of IKEA products, it feels reasonably sturdy and well put together.
- It feels stable when you sit in it
- The frame feels well planted
- It gives you the reassurance of buying from an established brand
That matters. One of the biggest risks with cheaper chairs is ending up in what I often think of as the Amazon chair lottery, where something looks good in the photos but disappoints badly in person.
With IKEA, you at least get a known brand, consistent materials, and easier access to returns or replacement parts.
Clean, modern design
I also think the chair looks good.
The curved backrest is more visually appealing than some flatter, more basic chair designs, and the overall shape feels more considered than many budget office chairs. The headrest is nicely integrated, and the design works well in a home office setting.
Where It Falls Short
Lumbar support is too firm for some people
Although it is helpful that the lumbar support moves up and down, you cannot reduce its firmness or remove it.
That is where the problem starts for some users.
For one person, it may feel supportive. For another, it may feel too prominent and too forceful into the lower back. If your spine shape does not match what the chair is trying to do, it can feel more intrusive than helpful.
Ideally, lumbar support should be adjustable not just in height, but also in intensity. Some chairs do this better with softer systems or air cells that can be reduced or increased depending on the user.
This chair does not give you that level of fine-tuning.
The seat is very firm
After spending time sitting in this chair, the main thing I kept coming back to was the firmness of the seat.
Some people will like a firmer feel, but this goes beyond simply feeling supportive. It feels quite hard over time, and not in a way that becomes more comfortable the longer you use it.
There is a lack of softness and pressure relief in the seat base, and that becomes more noticeable the longer you stay in one position.
This can lead to:
- Pressure through the sit bones
- More shifting and fidgeting
- Discomfort over longer sitting periods
For occasional use, that may be fine. For full working days, it is much more of a concern.
Limited support through the upper back
The lower back is reasonably supported, but the area higher up the spine is less convincing.
In particular, the thoracic spine and the area between the shoulder blades do not feel especially well supported. Over time, that can leave the upper body doing more of the work, particularly if you spend long periods at a desk.
That may contribute to:
- Slouching as the day goes on
- Tension around the neck and shoulders
- A general sense that the chair supports one area but neglects another
Who This Chair Could Suit
I think the JÄRVFJÄLLET could make sense for:
- Home or hybrid workers using it one to three days a week
- Students who want something more adjustable than a basic task chair
- Buyers on a budget who want a safer option than an unbranded online chair
If your expectations are realistic, there is value here. It gives you a good amount of adjustability, looks smart, and comes from a brand people generally trust.
Who Should Be Cautious
I would be more cautious with this chair if you:
- Have ongoing low back pain
- Sit for long hours most days of the week
- Need a seat with better pressure relief and comfort
It is not a terrible chair. In fact, it does more right than many cheap alternatives. But it is also not a chair I would describe as deeply supportive or particularly forgiving over long durations.
Value for Money
At around £180, the JÄRVFJÄLLET offers a fair amount for the money.
- Good adjustability
- Solid build quality
- A trusted retailer
- A modern, usable design
That makes it decent value on paper.
Where the value becomes less convincing is in the areas that affect long-term comfort most, especially the firmness of the seat and the limited support through the upper back.
Final Verdict
Score: 5.5 to 6 out of 10
The IKEA JÄRVFJÄLLET does quite a lot well.
- It is adjustable
- It looks good
- It feels sturdier than many budget rivals
- It comes from a brand people trust
But it also has clear limitations.
- The seat is too firm for longer use
- The lumbar support may feel too aggressive for some people
- The upper back support is not strong enough for all-day comfort
Chiropractor’s Take
Most people think back pain at a desk is purely about posture. It usually is not. More often, it is about how long you stay in one position, how well the chair supports you, and whether the chair allows you to move and stay comfortable throughout the day. The JÄRVFJÄLLET gives you some useful adjustability, but in my view it falls short of being a truly comfortable, supportive all-day chair.
Who I Think This Chair Is Best For
If you work from home part of the week, want better adjustability than a basic office chair, and do not want to spend premium-chair money, this is a sensible option. If you already struggle with back pain or sit for full days regularly, I would be inclined to look for something more supportive and more comfortable through the seat.
